Peter & Cherylann Schimmelfennig fell in love with this hotel a couple of years ago when they were taking a ride through California's historical Gold Country on their way to Yosemite. The hotel had been closed for a couple of years, and was not in such good condition. CherylAnn possessed the vision, and Peter provided the know-how, and together they brought new life to this historical monument. It was recently opened in 2004 and is already getting rave reviews from travelers worldwide!

The Jeffery family owned and operated the Hotel for many years, repairing it after each of the fires which swept through, devouring much of the town. Although Jeffery owned the hotel, he did not receive title to the property until 1878…. long story, come on in and we'll tell you more about it. The hotel has hosted gold miners, gun fighters, adventurers from every continent, and its share of distinguished visitors as well. President Theodore Roosevelt stayed here in 1902, when he was on his way to visit the Yosemite Valley.

And The Historic Hotel Jeffery was a favorite stop-over for other well-knowns such as naturalist John Muir, even well known writer & poet,Ralph Waldo Emerson. But the real stories come from California's historical Gold Rush. In 1848, someone struck gold, and word spread like wildfire. 1849 saw a frantic movement, of folks from all around, coming West to seek their easy fortune. This was the famous Gold Rush. People pitched tents up and down the rivers in the area, and the most populated areas were strung together by what is now called Historical Highway 49. Today, many of the towns that were active back then may now be visible as ghost towns, and some have been brought back to life by folks like your proprietors, Peter & Cherylann.
